The drive from Vancouver to Whistler on the Sea-to-Sky Highway is 125 kilometres that should take two hours and routinely takes four because you keep pulling over. Howe Sound appears below the highway as you climb out of Squamish โ a dramatic fjord with vertical granite walls descending into turquoise water. Shannon Falls drops 335 metres in a single plunge visible from the highway shoulder. The Stawamus Chief โ a granite monolith the size of a small mountain โ towers above Squamish with rock climbers visible as small bright dots on the face. And then the highway tilts north into the mountains and the ski resort appears at the end of the valley.
Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski area in North America by skiable terrain โ 8,171 acres across two mountains, connected by the Peak 2 Peak Gondola. The gondola is itself extraordinary: 4.4 kilometres between the summits, with a free-span section of 436 metres (the longest in the world) where the cable hangs unsupported over the valley 436 metres below. Some gondola cars have glass floors. The crossing takes 11 minutes and reveals both mountainsโ terrain from above.
What surprises most first-time summer visitors is how good Whistler is when the snow is gone. The mountain bike park is the finest lift-served biking in North America โ 1,530 metres of vertical, 80+ trails ranging from beginner green runs to expert jump lines that require full body armour. The gondola lifts bikes to the top; gravity does the rest. Lost Lake is a 20-minute walk from the village with swimming, paddleboarding, and forest trails. The village itself โ the pedestrian-only Whistler Village Stroll โ is surprisingly enjoyable without the snow: restaurants, bars, gear shops, and a mountain backdrop that doesnโt diminish with warmer weather.
Two Mountains, One Village
8,171 acres of ski terrain. The Peak 2 Peak Gondola connecting two summits at 2,182m. North America's best mountain bike park in summer. And a pedestrian village that manages to be genuinely good despite being a purpose-built ski resort.
Why Whistler should be on your Canada itinerary
Whistler is one of the worldโs premier ski destinations, consistently ranking in global top-5 lists alongside Zermatt, Verbier, and Courchevel. For North Americans, itโs the most accessible world-class ski area โ 2 hours from Vancouverโs international airport, with excellent infrastructure and accommodation range from hostels to the Fairmont Chateau. The snow record is exceptional: Whistler Blackcomb averages 11 metres of snow per year.
For summer visitors, Whistler offers a genuinely compelling alternative to the ski season crowds and peak-season prices. June through September brings 40โ50% lower accommodation rates, warm valley temperatures, and a mountain park that operates with the same gondola infrastructure but carries mountain bikers and hikers instead of skiers. The village in summer has food and music festivals, outdoor markets, and the same mountain backdrop at a fraction of the winter cost.
The Sea-to-Sky Highway is itself worth the trip โ one of Canadaโs great scenic drives that connects Vancouver to Whistler through Squamish.
What To Explore
Two mountains connected by a record-breaking gondola. North America's best mountain bike park. Alpine hikes to meadows with glacier views. Lost Lake in summer. And the Village Stroll at the centre of it all.
What should you do in Whistler?
Ski and Snowboard (Winter) โ Whistler Blackcomb operates November through April, with the best conditions typically January through March. The terrain covers every level from beginner green runs through double-black expert chutes. Full-day lift tickets $120โ200 CAD; multi-day passes reduce the per-day cost. Lessons, rentals, and ski-in/ski-out accommodation are all available.
Peak 2 Peak Gondola โ The record-setting gondola connecting the two mountain summits at 2,182 metres, with a 436m free-span section. Glass-floor gondola cars are available by request. Included with lift tickets; available separately in summer for sightseeing ($65 CAD round trip). The 11-minute crossing is extraordinary in both directions.
Whistler Mountain Bike Park (Summer) โ North Americaโs best lift-served mountain biking, operating June through October. $85 CAD/day gondola access to the summit, with 80+ trails from beginner to expert. Full-face helmets and body armour available to rent on-site. This is what serious mountain bikers from around the world come to Whistler for when the snow is gone.
Hiking to Alpine Meadows โ The summer gondola opens access to high-alpine terrain at 2,182m. The Harmony Meadows hike (3.2km round trip from the Symphony Express chair) crosses flower-filled meadows with glacier and peak views. No special fitness required; comfortable walking shoes adequate.
Lost Lake โ A 20-minute walk or 5-minute bike ride from the village. Swimming in warm summer water, paddleboard and kayak rentals, and a circuit trail through the surrounding forest. Completely free. The best free thing in Whistler.
Village Stroll โ The pedestrian-only main street of Whistler Village, with restaurants, bars, gear shops, and galleries. In winter, covered in snow and buzzing with aprรจs-ski energy. In summer, outdoor patios and markets on weekends. Free.

- Avoid: Booking mid-mountain accommodation without checking whether it's ski-in/ski-out. "Slope-side" can mean a 15-minute walk to the lift in full ski gear. The Fairmont Chateau and Four Seasons are genuinely ski-in/ski-out at Blackcomb base. Everything else needs verification.

When is the best time to visit Whistler?
December through March โ Peak ski season with the best snow conditions and full resort atmosphere. January and February are the best snow months. Accommodation is most expensive; book months ahead for holiday periods.
July through September โ Summer season with mountain biking, hiking, and Garibaldi Provincial Park access. Prices drop 40โ50% from ski season. The mountains are equally beautiful without snow and the activities are genuinely excellent.
April through May โ Spring skiing with corn snow and warm sunshine at lower rates. Not all terrain is open, but the conditions can be extraordinary and the crowds are minimal.
October through November โ Shoulder season with minimal activity. Some early season skiing begins in late November but coverage is limited. The lowest rates of the year for village accommodation.
Whistler is most naturally combined with a Vancouver base โ drive or bus the Sea-to-Sky Highway (a great drive regardless of destination) and spend 2โ3 nights at the mountain. See the full Canada destinations guide for British Columbia planning.
